Guitar became very popular in Baroque period, most notably in France, Italy and Spain.
It was used to accompany voice, instruments and for solo pieces. Most of the 17th and 18th century guitar repertoire consisted of dances which served as a base for elaborate, rhythmically intricate and often richly ornamented variations with elements of European, American and even African tradition.
